What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a specialist who treats irregularities in the alignment of teeth and jaws. Becoming an orthodontist requires 2-3 years of additional education after a dental degree is earned.

Many people wonder about the difference between dentistry and orthodontics. Dental treatment focuses on the health of your teeth, while orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that concentrates on something call malocclusion - which simply means how your teeth fit together.

Dental Problems

Orthodontic treatment can be necessary to repair:
  •     Narrow aches
  •     Crowded and spaced teeth
  •     Impacted teeth
  •     Improper jaw alignment

We often work closely with other dental specialists.  These may include:
  •     Periodontists
  •     Oral surgeons
  •     Prosthodontists

Orthodontics isn't just about braces

Our most common approach to correcting orthodontic problems is to attach braces to your teeth. Braces work by gently guiding your teeth into proper alignment. On average, teeth move at a rate of 1 millimeter per month.

Depending on your problems, there are several appliances that we use to help address those issues.
  • Rapid palatal expander - to widen upper jaw
  • Trans-palatal arch bar - to maintain width or space
  • Herbst appliance - to modify growth
  • Headgear - to modify growth
  • Forsus appliance - to move teeth
  • Spring retainer - to move teeth
  • Lower lingual holding arch - to maintain space
  • Lip bumper - to create space
  • Aligners - to move teeth
